Lemons Breakdown: Top 5 Most Popular Cocktails of 2016

Alex Lessard

We love pageants. Obviously not the Miss Universe kind - we're talking about cocktails. Every year Drinks International asks 100 of the world's best bartenders for their picks. Was it the voluptuous and curvy Margarita? The deep brooding of a Dark and Stormy? Or the perky, jumpy boost of an Espresso Martini?

Perhaps in reaction to a tumultuous and unpredictable year (we miss you Prince!) the classics made a comeback. No molecular mixology or fancy shenanigans; the winners were the timeless classics that we've all come to know and love.

#5 - Dry Martini

With our apologies to Mr. Bond, Lemons prefers this timeless drink 'stirred not shaken'. Keep alert for our upcoming article to discover why! That being said, it's no surprise that the quintessentially classic Martini makes the cut. You can't go wrong with a gin martini (or vodka if you must); this poster child for sophistication was made to impress.

#4 - Daquiri

A classic favorite, the Daiquiri climbed two spots on the Top 50 Cocktails list from last year. Over the years, this rum, lime juice and simple syrup drink has come to incarnate presidential good looks and literary genius. Are you a Kennedy or a Hemingway? We'll order a few more while you decide.

#3 - Manhattan

We chuckled with pride at this one. As citizens of the Big Apple, we always like to see the Manhattan in the top 5, although we wouldn't have said no to a New York Sour either... Made with rye whiskey, sweet vermouth and Angostura bitters, this drink would be number one if we were only looking at sexiness!

#2 - Negroni

Ok, here's our Lemons tip: do you want to impress your peers and your bartender? Order a Negroni. This satisfyingly bitter cocktail is made with Campari, gin and sweet vermouth, and is sure to get you a knowing nod from us cocktail specialists.

#1 - Old Fashioned

Some may believe this rank is due to Don Draper's influence behind the scenes, but don't let yourself be fooled by fancy marketing gimmicks. The Old Fashioned has been No. 1 for two years in a row for a simple reason: it's the tailored black suit of cocktails, so classically elegant that it never goes out of style. The gentlemen know: if there's one accessory you need to look good at a bar, it's an Old Fashioned in your hand.
